Mr. Dayanidhi Maran, Hon’ble Minister for
Communications and Information Technology belongs to an illustrious
family of Tamil Nadu whose contributions to the development of
the State has been numerous and manifolds. His father late Murasoli
Maran served in the Union Cabinet in various capacities, his last
important assignment being Minister for Commerce and Industry.
It was during this tenure that late Murasoli Maran was able to
successfully put India’s case at the forum of the World
Trade Organization (WTO) forthrightly and firmly. He was considered
a votary of liberalization and anti-licence raj. The Trade Policy
also got new direction under his stewardship, thus laying a solid
foundation for the country’s economy.
It is for the first time that Mr. Dayanidhi Maran contested and
got elected to the fourteenth Lok Sabha from the Central Madras
constituency, securing 61.7% of the 5,12,820 votes polled and
winning by a margin of over 1,34,000 votes, and thus continued
the legacy of his late father. Mr. Maran, younger son of late
Murasoli Maran, received initial education in Tamil Nadu and graduated
in Economics from Loyola College in Chennai. He attended many
educational programmes and courses including the “Owner
/President Management Programme” (OPM) from Harvard Business
School in Boston, United Sates of America.
Mr. Dayanidhi Maran has inherited politics from his late father
who dedicated his entire life to the services of the downtrodden
and the oppressed classes. During his leadership, late Murasoli
Maran took up many cudgels and fought for their causes. His grand
uncle Dr. Kalignar M. Karunanidhi, the Chief Minister of Tamil
Nadu, through his unfathomed contributions, has guided and given
new momentum to the growth of the State.
Mr. Maran has been deeply involved and associated with the Print
Media for well over a decade. He is a voracious reader and takes
keen interest in areas of current affairs, political science,
social science, commerce, finance, global trade and information
technology.
Mr. Dayanidhi Maran has widely traveled and been to many countries
and attended various seminars, conference which enabled him to
get first-hand exposure in the diverse fields of media, television,
cable technology, political economy and management.
Mr. Maran is keen sportsman and love playing golf, cricket and
tennis.
